This development marked a pivotal moment for the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which gained support from a group of dissenting MLAs from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
As reported by News18, 22 MLAs opposed the motion, while five members chose to abstain during the Assembly’s floor test.
Support from allies and rebel AIADMK MLAs for TVK
TVK entered the floor test with backing from alliance partners, including Congress, VCK, IUML, CPI, and CPM.
The ruling faction effectively had the support of 118 legislators after certain Speaker exclusions and a Madras High Court ruling that barred TVK MLA Srinivasa Sethupathi from voting.
This support was bolstered by 26 AIADMK legislators from a dissenting faction who voted in favor of the government.
AMMK MLA S Kamaraj also indicated support for the ruling party despite having previously criticized TVK.
The rebel AIADMK faction, led by SP Velumani, made it clear that their support was not contingent upon any demands for cabinet roles or political appointments.
