Girish Chodankar, the All India Congress Committee in-charge for Tamil Nadu, stated that the decision was made after TVK President Vijay requested Congress’s assistance in forming the government in the state.
“The citizens of Tamil Nadu, particularly the youth, have cast a strong, clear, and overwhelming vote for a secular, progressive, and welfare-oriented government that adheres to constitutional values,” the Congress indicated in a statement.
“The Indian National Congress is the foundational political party for secular, progressive, and welfare-based politics in India. It is our constitutional obligation to respect, uphold, and help realize this mandate from the people of Tamil Nadu,” it continued.
TVK-Congress alliance to persist long-term
The Congress emphasized that this alliance is not just for forming the current government but also for future elections for local bodies, the Lok Sabha, and the Rajya Sabha.

According to the statement, Vijay and Rahul Gandhi have jointly committed to honoring the “historic verdict” of the Tamil Nadu populace for a secular and progressive government, aiming to fulfill the aspirations and promises made to the people, especially the youth.
What’s the sole condition of Congress for the TVK alliance?
The Congress has laid out a singular condition for collaborating with the TVK, which is essentially to exclude the BJP and its allies from power in Tamil Nadu.
In formal terms, the Congress declared, “Our support will be contingent upon the TVK excluding any communal forces from this alliance that do not adhere to the Constitution of India.”
“This partnership between the TVK and Tamil Nadu Congress seeks to revive the glorious days of Perunthalaivar Kamaraj in Tamil Nadu, with a strong commitment to Thanthai Periyar’s ideals of social justice and Dr. B R Ambedkar’s constitutional principles for the years to come,” it stated.
DMK criticizes Congress support for TVK
The alliance between Congress and TVK has not been favorably received by one of Congress’s allies, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
The DMK has condemned the Congress support for TVK, labeling it as “backstabbing” and “untrustworthy,” warning that it could lead to the Congress party’s downfall.
