Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma resigned on Wednesday (May 6) alongside his cabinet members, clearing the path for a new BJP-led government, officials reported.

The BJP-led NDA secured 102 seats in the 126-member assembly. The elections were conducted in a single round on April 9, with vote counting occurring on May 4.

“To facilitate the formation of the new government following the official results of #AssamElections2026, Dr @himantabiswa submitted his resignation as Chief Minister, along with the council of Ministers, to Hon’ble Governor Shri @Laxmanacharya54 today at Lok Bhawan,” stated the Chief Minister’s Office in a post on X.
The Governor has accepted the resignation, requesting Sarma to remain as the caretaker CM until the new government takes office, the office mentioned.

Later, speaking to the press outside Lok Bhawan, Sarma indicated that the oath-taking ceremony is expected to occur after May 11.

“Given it was a historic victory, we have extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the ceremony,” he stated.

The PMO has communicated that Modi is occupied until May 11, and he can visit the state afterward, Sarma added.

When asked about the selection of the next chief minister, he mentioned: “The BJP has appointed two central observers. In their presence, the legislature party will select the leader for the next CM. Following that, NDA members will convene to finalize the name. Therefore, we should wait for the process to be completed.”

The BJP appointed Union minister J P Nadda as its central observer for the election of the legislative party leader in Assam, with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini serving as co-observer.

In the company of cabinet colleague Ranoj Pegu and MLA Manab Deka, Sarma stated: “The legislature party meeting will occur before May 11. We expect information from Nadda’s office today or tomorrow. The date will be confirmed by Nadda and Saini.”

After the meeting of party MLAs and the approval of the leader’s name by NDA members, the BJP will claim the formation of the government, he noted.

When asked about the possibility of new faces in the cabinet, Sarma replied: “The leader of the legislature party has yet to be chosen. The new CM will determine if there will be new members in the council of ministers.”

In the assembly elections, the ruling BJP achieved victory with 82 seats, while its allies Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) secured 10 seats each.
