TVK Breaks 10% Threshold Trend for Third Front with Almost 35% Vote Share
The 2026 Assembly results reveal that the newcomer TVK, spearheaded by actor Vijay, achieved an impressive 34.92 percent vote share in its first election. This marks a significant departure from previous trends in Tamil Nadu, where third-party candidates have typically found it hard to exceed the 10 percent mark.

Historically, third-party candidates in Tamil Nadu have faced challenges in surpassing the 10 percent threshold, as demonstrated by the DMDK-led Makkal Nala Kootani (People’s Welfare Front) alliance in 2016 and the NTK.

In the 2016 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections, the DMDK-led alliance, which included MDMK, VCK, TMC, CPI, and CPI(M), garnered a total vote share of 6.1 percent. Despite contesting a considerable number of seats statewide, the alliance did not win any seats during that election cycle.
Actor Kamal Haasan’s MNM competed in 180 constituencies during the 2021 elections, achieving a vote share of 2.62 percent. It did not secure any seats, and Haasan was among the unsuccessful candidates.

TVK’s performance in 2026 signals a significant shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. For the first time in 59 years, a party other than DMK or AIADMK has led the state in vote share.

The rise of this third alternative has caused both established Dravidian parties to record their lowest combined vote share in decades. The DMK, which boasted a substantial 37.70 percent vote share in the 2021 elections, saw its support diminish to 24.19 percent, according to EC data, representing a loss of nearly a third of its electoral backing.

The AIADMK also experienced a historic low, with its support dropping to 21.21 percent, down from the 33.29 percent it received in 2021 and 40.88 percent in 2016.

Further examination of the data indicates a divided field among other competitors, with Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) securing four percent of the votes. The Congress and the BJP followed with 3.37 percent and 2.97 percent, respectively, while smaller regional parties like DMDK and VCK obtained 1.20 percent and 1.09 percent.

Interestingly, although NTK held steady at four percent, it failed to win any seats in the assembly for the fourth consecutive time since its inception. In contrast, Congress managed to capture five seats this time with a vote share of 3.37 percent.

With independent candidates and other minor parties collectively accounting for 4.97 percent and NOTA at 0.41 percent, TVK’s consolidation of over one-third of the total votes has disrupted the state’s traditional bipolar system.

TVK won 108 seats and has established itself as the largest party following the April 23 Assembly elections.
