Rahul Dravid, Andy Flower, and Richard Dawson Rise as Candidates for England Test Coach Position Following Brendon McCullum’s Departure
Indian cricket legend Rahul Dravid has emerged as a frontrunner to take over from Brendon McCullum as England’s Test coach, following the New Zealander’s dismissal after the team’s underwhelming performance in the longest format.

As reported by the Daily Telegraph, Dravid is among several potential candidates, including former England coach Andy Flower and ex-England spinner Richard Dawson.

McCullum’s four-year stint as Test coach came to an end after England’s 1-2 home series defeat against New Zealand, prompting the England and Wales Cricket Board to conclude that ”the time is right to make a change” in anticipation of next year’s Ashes.
He will continue to manage the ODI and T20I squads.

The 53-year-old Dravid, who led India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2023 World Test Championship final, is regarded as an appealing candidate due to his ”meticulous” approach and profound understanding of the sport.

Nonetheless, the newspaper highlighted that Dravid has ”no desire” to coach full-time.

”Dravid has no desire to coach full-time, but the England Test position would provide him with extended home periods and the opportunity to help preserve his favorite format of the game. England should at the very least explore his interest,” the report states.

Among the standout candidates is Zimbabwean great Andy Flower, who is England’s most successful coach in the modern era, having secured three Ashes series victories and the No. 1 Test ranking.

Flower has also achieved significant success in franchise cricket, including two consecutive IPL titles with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Dawson, the current head coach of Glamorgan, is also regarded as a strong option after showcasing his tactical skills and coaching credentials at both county and international levels.

Other names mentioned in the report include Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara, England Lions coach Andrew Flintoff, Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson, and former Australia coach Justin Langer.
