“The president is happy to accept the resignation of Shri N. Rangasamy, Chief Minister of Puducherry, along with his Council of Ministers, effective from 07.05.2026. However, Shri N. Rangasamy and his Council of Ministers will continue to operate in a caretaker role until the new Council of Ministers is sworn in,” according to a gazette notification published on Friday evening.
AINRC leader Rangasamy submitted his resignation letter to Lieutenant Governor K Kailashnathan at Lok Bhavan on Thursday.
Rangasamy is poised to take office as chief minister for a fifth term following the AINRC-led NDA’s decisive victory in the Union Territory elections.
The All India NR Congress (AINRC) won 12 out of the 16 seats it contested, while the BJP secured four out of the 10 seats it fought for. Other NDA members, the AIADMK and the Latchia Jananayaga Katchi (LJK), won one seat each, bringing the alliance’s total to 18 in the 30-member assembly. Additionally, there will be three nominated members.
The opposition DMK obtained five seats, and Congress secured one. The emerging TVK managed to win two seats.
