With this victory, Djokovic has surpassed Roger Federer, marking 82 appearances in men’s singles Grand Slam events.
Mpetshi Perricard once led 6-5 in the first set, becoming the first player in 17 years to win a set against Djokovic in the opening round of Roland Garros.
“Congratulations to Giovanni,” Djokovic remarked in French. “Facing him for the first time, it’s nearly impossible to predict his serve. I’ve experienced that maybe once or twice in my career, against players like Reilly Opelka or Ivo Karlovic.
“In matches like this, staying focused and waiting for chances is crucial. It was a bit challenging, but ultimately, I found my best tennis and return game just when it mattered most.”
As the third seed, Djokovic handled Mpetshi Perricard’s strong baseline play and capitalized on his 10th break point in the second set to level the match, steadily increasing his intensity to breeze through the third set.
Mpetshi Perricard sought treatment for wrist and arm discomfort and managed to recover an early break in the subsequent set. However, Djokovic regained the lead at 4-3, setting the stage for a win in his 22nd consecutive Grand Slam appearance.
Djokovic celebrated his victory with a little dance and expressed gratitude to his fans in the stands.
“The atmosphere is incredible; it gives me so much energy on the court,” he noted.
