Mirabai Chanu secured India’s inaugural gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games (CWG) by breaking new records in both the snatch and the clean and jerk during the women’s 48kg weightlifting event on Sunday.

Chanu successfully lifted 85kg in the snatch, setting a new record and finishing the first segment of the competition a full eight kilograms ahead of her closest rival, placing herself in an advantageous position for the clean and jerk.

She proceeded to lift 105 kg in the clean and jerk, shattering another tournament record and earning her third consecutive CWG gold medal.
The Manipuri weightlifter entered the competition as one of India’s most promising medal contenders and quickly validated her status with a remarkable record-setting performance.

Earlier that day, Chanambam Rishikanta Singh brought home India’s first silver medal of the Glasgow Games in the men’s 60kg category. The 28-year-old also established a Commonwealth Games record in the snatch with a lift of 121kg before registering 143kg in the clean and jerk for a combined total of 264kg.

Rishikanta ultimately secured second place behind Malaysia’s Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq, marking India’s second medal of the Games following para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar’s bronze medal on Friday.

After a relatively subdued start to the Glasgow Games on the opening three days, India’s medal count gained momentum on Sunday with weightlifters producing record-setting feats.
