This initiative will link the Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk Monorail Station, Metro Line 3, and Mahalaxmi suburban railway station via an integrated pedestrian bridge, allowing passengers to switch between all three transport systems effortlessly.
As per the MMRDA, the integrated interchange is projected to cut passenger transfer times by about 20 minutes once operational. It will enhance access to the Mumbai Monorail from South Mumbai and Worli while promoting increased public transport usage through seamless multimodal connectivity.
The project includes a roughly 283-metre-long, 11-metre-wide pedestrian bridge fitted with six travellators spanning a total of 176 metres. It will also have two passenger lifts for universal access and is designed to handle approximately 4,500 passengers per hour.
The MMRDA noted that this project is taking place in one of Mumbai’s most densely utility-filled corridors. Before construction began, a stormwater drain with a diameter of 1,800 mm was carefully relocated, while nearby water supply and sewer lines remained intact, ensuring continuous civic services throughout the project.
The authority emphasized that the project was completed without the need to fell any trees. Traffic management was coordinated with the Traffic Police, allowing the annual Ganesh Visarjan processions along Sane Guruji Marg to proceed without interruption during construction.
MMRDA described the project as more than just a pedestrian bridge, highlighting it as a significant milestone toward developing an integrated public transport ecosystem where the Metro, Monorail, and suburban railway function as a cohesive network for Mumbai.
