On Sunday, Spain achieved a 1-0 victory in extra time against Argentina at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, claiming their second FIFA World Cup title. However, their celebrations were momentarily marred by a clash between players from both sides shortly after the final whistle.
Video evidence captured Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes at the center of the melee after he seemingly grabbed Spain defender Eric Garcia by the throat. When Spain substitute Gavi attempted to step in, Paredes appeared to shove the midfielder down.
Spain captain Rodri was also drawn into the fray, having seemingly been hit in the stomach by Argentina defender Nahuel Molina while rushing to celebrate with teammates. Molina later engaged Rodri again, with Argentina defender Nicolas Otamendi seen verbally sparring with his former Manchester City colleague.
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni and several players intervened to defuse the situation before it escalated further.
In a statement released on Monday, FIFA confirmed the initiation of disciplinary proceedings.
“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to look into potential violations of the FIFA Disciplinary Code concerning the post-match incidents,” the organization stated.
FIFA did not provide a timeline for the investigation nor name any specific players under investigation. Although Paredes was not issued a red card post-match, he may still face retrospective disciplinary measures if found to have engaged in misconduct.
Spain secured the World Cup title through Ferran Torres’ extra-time goal after Argentina was reduced to 10 players. Midfielder Enzo Fernandez received a red card in stoppage time during regular play after collecting his second yellow card.
The tension persisted during the trophy presentation, with Argentina’s players facing their supporters with their backs turned to the podium as Spain celebrated with the World Cup trophy. This gesture contrasted sharply with Spain’s prior show of respect for the runners-up as they received their medals, adding to the already tense conclusion of the tournament’s showcase event.
