The event occurred at 11:05 p.m. local time, approximately 32 kilometers (20 miles) from the coastal town of Yilan. Tremors were experienced throughout the island, including in the capital city of Taipei, where buildings trembled from the impact.
A resident in Yilan County recounted how a building initially shook vertically before shifting horizontally.
“It kept on shaking for a while. Then I ran out, but most people did not run out. I was scared,” he explained.
The epicenter was located 70 kilometers (43 miles) below the surface, and there have been no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries. Local news footage displayed swaying televisions in an office and cleaning products spilled from supermarket shelves.
In a post on social media, Taiwanese President William Lai Ching-te urged citizens to remain vigilant for possible aftershocks.
