Karnataka Leadership Transition Date Not Yet Determined: Cong Chief Kharge

Kharge apologies for 'illiterate' comment, affirms his profound respect for Gujaratis.
Kalaburagi (Karnataka): Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge stated on Friday that no date has been set to discuss a potential leadership change in Karnataka.

This announcement comes amid growing speculation regarding a power struggle between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D K Shivakumar.

At a press conference, Kharge affirmed that any decisions regarding leadership would be made collectively by the party’s high command following thorough consultations.
He also warned against misinterpretation of his statements.

”We will make a decision together, the three of us: I, as the AICC president; Sonia Gandhi, as the Congress Parliamentary Party president; and Rahul Gandhi, as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. That’s why we always function as a unit,” he clarified.

Kharge elaborated, ”When the three of us agree on a date, we will make a decision. Since no date has been set yet, I cannot say if any change is forthcoming.” He emphasized that the Congress leadership adheres to a consultative approach before reaching any conclusions.

”In the high command, we engage in extensive discussions amongst ourselves and also consult other senior leaders. We assess the potential outcomes before taking steps accordingly,” the Congress chief noted.

He highlighted that no specific timeline had been established, asserting, ”When it happens, I will certainly notify you. Please do not misinterpret this.” He mentioned that he often refrains from public comments to avoid misrepresentation.

Highlighting party discipline, Kharge stated that any final decision would be obligatory for all members.

”Any decision made will be in the best interest of the state, and everyone must support the high command’s decision,” he remarked.

On Thursday, Kharge mentioned there was no change in the CM position in Karnataka ”for now” and that the leadership issue in the state would be resolved soon.

This statement comes amidst ongoing speculation about a supposed agreement for a power transfer to Shivakumar when the Congress government reaches its halfway point in November 2025.

While Siddaramaiah has expressed his intention to complete a full five-year term, he has also indicated he would comply with any decision made by the party leadership.

Recently, the visit of Shivakumar and his brother D K Suresh to Delhi sparked rumors of a leadership shift. Supporters of Shivakumar are also energized.
