A psychologist involved in the trial concerning Diego Maradona’s death informed an Argentine court on Thursday that the soccer legend suffered from bipolar disorder and exhibited narcissistic traits, while also emphasizing the need for a strict zero-alcohol treatment plan, according to Argentine media reports.

Carlos Diaz, 34, is facing manslaughter charges with reckless intent for prescribing inappropriate medication. He is among seven defendants being held accountable for the former Argentine captain and national coach’s demise.

”There was evidence of bipolar disorder and narcissism,” Diaz was quoted by the newspaper El Clarin during the trial in Buenos Aires. ”He had the power to bring a country to its knees, yet just one glass of alcohol could render him helpless.”
Diaz recounted that he met Maradona on October 26, 2020, just 29 days before the football icon passed away, noting that Maradona was drinking wine while seated on a couch at that time, as reported by La Nacion Argentina.

”The initial image shocked me; he reminded me of my father, an alcoholic who had died a few months earlier,” the newspaper quoted Diaz as saying.

He informed the court that he believed Maradona aimed to transform his lifestyle and designed the star’s treatment to focus on abstaining from alcohol, as reported by El Clarin. He also mentioned that the toxicology report indicated Maradona’s life ended 23 days after he ceased drug use.

The forward secured titles with clubs like Boca Juniors, Barcelona, and Napoli, and captained Argentina to victory in the 1986 World Cup. He died on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60, following surgery for a subdural hematoma.

This trial is assessing the potential criminal liability of his medical and care team for his death.

Neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, another defendant, also testified on Thursday, asserting that Maradona’s home hospitalization was suitable and was not intended to serve as an intensive-care unit, as reported by El Clarin.
