On Monday, Tata Steel announced its intention to invest ₹10,000 crore in projects located in Jharkhand by 2028, which will generate 2,000 direct and indirect jobs.

The company is targeting a steelmaking capacity of 40 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) in India, increasing from the current 27.35 MTPA, through capacity expansion and a shift to low-emission steelmaking methods.

“Tata Steel is dedicated to investing ₹10,000 crore in its Jharkhand initiatives, including ₹7,000 crore for HIsarna & Easy Melting Technology by 2028. This investment will create a total of 2,000 direct and indirect positions,” a company representative informed the media.
Sarvesh Kumar, Tata Steel’s Chief of Corporate Communication, stated that the proposed investments encompass ₹2,600 crore for expanding the Tinplate Division, along with ₹1,500 crore allocated for the Combi mill.

HIsarna, a proprietary technology from Tata Steel, presents a cutting-edge low-carbon method for iron production that allows for the direct manufacture of iron, eliminating the need for traditional coke, sinter, or pellet facilities.

“This technology has been successfully operational at our site in the Netherlands for the past decade, producing 60,000 tonnes per annum, thereby proving its scalability,” an official remarked.

“A pilot plant with a capacity of one million tonnes is in the works within the existing Jamshedpur ecosystem, leveraging current infrastructure, with the produced hot metal destined for the Jamshedpur steel melt shops. The engineering study for this endeavor has already begun,” the official added.

Notable benefits of the HIsarna approach include the ability to utilize readily available coking coals in India, thereby decreasing reliance on imported coking coal and lowering raw material expenses.

This method also presents a significantly reduced capital expenditure compared to traditional steel plant construction because it eliminates several upstream facilities.

From a sustainability perspective, HIsarna generates approximately 20 percent less carbon dioxide than the conventional blast furnace method.

Tata Steel currently possesses a consolidated steelmaking capacity exceeding 36 MTPA — not counting the UK’s 3.2 MT which is in transition — across India (27.35 MT), the Netherlands (7 MT), and Thailand (1.7 MT) to cater to Southeast Asian markets.

The company is aiming to elevate its capacity to beyond 50 million tonnes in the long run, primarily in India, where plans are underway to add over 12 MT.

In India, Tata Steel manages and operates 11 MTPA steel plants in Jamshedpur and 1 MTPA in Gamharia, Jharkhand.

Additionally, in Odisha’s Kalinganagar, the company boasts a 9 MTPA production capacity, which includes Neelancha Ipsat Nigam Ltd (NINL), acquired through the insolvency process. Tata Steel also runs a 5.6 MTPA facility in Meramandali, Odisha.
