The service offers one-hour streaming sessions that include advertisements prior to gameplay. The company indicated that this test aims to provide players with an additional method to access cloud gaming on devices they already own.
“For many players, the device they already own now allows them to stream games with XBOX,” stated Microsoft in a blog post.
How the ad-supported game streaming operates
During this trial, eligible Xbox Insiders can stream compatible games across various devices and regions at no extra charge. Before each session, users will see advertisements; however, Microsoft assured that these ads will not disrupt gameplay, with the core gaming experience remaining intact once a session begins.
Each streaming session is capped at one hour. Microsoft has yet to reveal if there will be limits on the number of sessions users can initiate daily or monthly throughout the testing period. Furthermore, the feature is entirely optional, allowing players to continue accessing their games through other methods.
Why Microsoft is launching the feature
As stated by Microsoft, this test is designed to offer more players an economical way to access cloud gaming without incurring extra subscription costs.
The company believes that cloud streaming could be especially advantageous for Xbox One owners, enabling them to play newer games created for the Xbox Series X|S without the need for immediate hardware upgrades.
It also aspires to enhance gaming accessibility in regions where consoles are either costly or hard to obtain.
Microsoft’s advertising strategy
In discussing the rationale for this initiative, Microsoft mentioned that advertising has long been part of the gaming landscape through in-game placements and free-to-play models.
The company aims to ensure that ads help lower accessibility costs without interfering with the gaming experience.
“It offers another avenue for players to engage with games without a significant upfront streaming purchase and broadens audiences through innovative ways to play,” the company elaborated.
It has outlined several guiding principles for the test, which include avoiding gameplay interruptions, clearly marking advertisements, maintaining ad quality, and ensuring appropriateness for each platform.
Xbox business undergoes significant restructuring
This announcement comes as Microsoft continues to transform its Xbox business. Earlier this month, the company revealed a major restructuring, which resulted in about 3,200 layoffs and the spinoff of four game development studios.
Additionally, Microsoft has introduced Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC, allowing select original Xbox titles to be played on Windows PCs and compatible handheld devices for the first time. The initial lineup features titles such as Blinx: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live & Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy.
