U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday criticized the European Union for what he termed an illegal decision to fine Alphabet’s Google, stating that Washington would investigate the bloc’s actions as an attempt to “rob” American companies. The European Commission had previously fined Google €890 million ($1 billion) for disregarding EU regulations intended to limit the reach of Big Tech.
“We will immediately initiate a 301 Investigation into the practice of ‘ROBBING’ American Companies,”
Trump declared in a social media message, referencing Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.
“The European Union will face a substantial backlash for this illegal and highly unethical behavior,” he added.
