ISRO Develops Communication Connection with Europe to Ensure Gaganyaan Crew Safety: Important Highlights
India is advancing its aspirations for human spaceflight by creating a robust communication system for upcoming missions. As part of the Gaganyaan initiative, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is setting up a framework for quick and secure data sharing, which is vital for ensuring the safety of astronauts during space travel.

ISRO intends to establish a dedicated communication link with a prominent European space center to aid its Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission.

A report from News18 indicates that this effort is part of India’s larger ambition to send humans into space and eventually conduct missions to the Moon.
For human spaceflight, continuous communication between the spacecraft and ground stations is critical. Even slight delays in data transmission or reception can impact decision-making and potentially jeopardize the mission. To mitigate this, ISRO is developing a system for rapid and secure data transfer.

The strategy involves connecting two primary centers. The first is the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in India, which features one of ISRO’s tracking stations. The second is the European Space Operations Centre located in Darmstadt, Germany, which assists space missions globally.

These two centers will be interconnected using optical fiber technology. This approach utilizes light for data transmission, ensuring faster and more reliable communication over long distances. It will enable the transfer of substantial amounts of mission data without delays.

Additionally, ISRO will implement a private network system known as MPLS, which functions independently from the public internet. This guarantees that communication remains secure and stable. Specialized routers will be installed at both locations to efficiently manage and direct data flow.

The primary goal of this system is to enable real-time sharing of critical information, including spacecraft details, tracking information, and commands dispatched from the ground. For missions involving astronauts, quick response times are essential to address any situations effectively.

Sources informed CNN-News18, “By partnering with international centers and investing in state-of-the-art communication technology, ISRO is enhancing its capabilities and moving closer to realizing safe and successful human space missions,” highlighting the importance of this advancement.
