The regulations are designed to operationalize the Online Gaming Authority of India, which will monitor the sector and implement oversight across various categories of online games.
Under the revised framework, Meity has eased registration requirements, enabling companies to start offering e-sports and social gaming services by simply submitting an application to the authority. This change aims to lower entry barriers and facilitate quicker deployment of compliant gaming platforms.
Importantly, registration will not be compulsory for most online social games, indicating a more lenient regulatory stance for low-risk categories. Nevertheless, the rules specify that certain games will necessitate mandatory registration based on established criteria.
These criteria include games with substantial user participation, those involving financial transactions, and those deemed to have higher risks. Additionally, the country of origin for such games will play a role in determining the need for registration.
The initiative aims to establish a structured regulatory environment while maintaining a balance between ease of doing business and user protection. By categorizing games according to risk and scale, the framework intends to guarantee oversight where needed without imposing blanket restrictions throughout the industry.
