Evolving Travel Preferences and Strategies for Planning More Efficient Trips
Travel behavior is shifting as people blend financial prudence with more mindful lifestyle and environmental choices. From funding trips to selecting destinations, experts suggest that travelers are leaning towards more organized planning, increased cost awareness, and a heightened preference for sustainable experiences.

How planning is reshaping travel decisions

Industry analysts point out that travel is increasingly viewed as a planned financial objective rather than a spontaneous expenditure.
Bernard Corraya, General Manager at Wego India, mentioned that travelers are allocating a specific portion of their monthly earnings for travel, which helps them avoid using long-term savings or emergency funds.

He emphasized that digital resources like fare alerts, flexible date searches, and price monitoring tools are enhancing cost-effective planning.

From a financial perspective, Karthik Venkataraman, CRPO at Vernost, underscored the significance of prioritizing long-term goals like savings and investments before designating funds for discretionary spending such as travel.

He explained that structured strategies, including distinct “lifestyle corpuses” and automated savings, assist individuals in maintaining discipline while planning for recreation.

How travelers are becoming more value-conscious

Experts observe that travelers are not necessarily traveling less, but rather changing their travel habits.

Corraya highlighted a noticeable trend towards value-driven choices, with travelers opting for off-peak times, shorter stays, or alternative destinations to manage increasing costs.

He noted that inflation and currency fluctuations make advance planning more crucial than ever.

At the same time, experts warn against excessive reliance on credit for travel. Although credit cards can provide rewards and flexibility, they should be supported by clear repayment strategies to prevent long-term financial pressure.

How sustainability is shaping choices

In addition to financial aspects, sustainability is playing a significant role in how travel experiences are designed and chosen.

Jaspreet Singh, General Manager at Six Senses Vana, stated that sustainability and wellness are now closely linked, with travelers actively seeking nature-focused experiences that merge personal wellness with environmental accountability.

Jai Sreedhar, Joint Managing Director & CEO of Rosetta Hospitality, elaborated that sustainability-driven wellness is becoming a fundamental expectation, not just a niche trend. He noted this is influencing design and investment choices, emphasizing natural materials, energy efficiency, and immersive experiences in nature.

Jeffery Smith, Vice President – Sustainability at Six Senses, remarked that travelers now seek authenticity and measurable impact rather than merely symbolic sustainability efforts.

He added that sustainability is increasingly integrated into hospitality design from the very beginning.

How wider environmental thinking is influencing travel

Beyond hospitality, environmental concerns are also affecting broader development considerations.

Dikshu C. Kukreja, Director at CP Kukreja Foundation for Design Excellence, stressed the need for a more cohesive approach to fragile ecosystems. He indicated that development must shift towards science-based, long-term planning, particularly as infrastructure and tourism pressures grow.

Tips: How travelers can adapt to changing travel patterns

Experts recommend strategies that reflect these shifting trends:

  • Budget travel as a set monthly expense rather than spontaneous spending
  • Focus on long-term savings before discretionary expenditures
  • Utilize price alerts and flexible date features to enhance travel savings
  • Limit reliance on credit, ensuring repayment aligns with income schedules
  • Opt for off-peak travel or alternative destinations for improved value
  • Seek accommodations and experiences that promote sustainability and nature
