Elon Musk faces defeat in crucial OpenAI lawsuit as jury supports Sam Altman.
A federal court in the US has dismissed Elon Musk’s legal challenge against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, bringing an end to one of Silicon Valley’s most scrutinized corporate disputes regarding the future of artificial intelligence.

An advisory jury determined that Altman, OpenAI, and its leadership bore no liability for Musk’s claims, a decision subsequently affirmed by US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers.

The lawsuit, initiated by Musk in 2024, charged OpenAI with straying from its original nonprofit objectives and morphing into a profit-driven entity, violating the commitments made at its establishment in 2015. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI with Altman and others, resigned from the company’s board in 2018.
Musk contended that OpenAI was intended to advance artificial intelligence for the public good and not for private financial gain. During testimony, he mentioned that he invested nearly $38 million into the organization with that belief.

The case also implicated Microsoft, with Musk claiming the tech giant facilitated OpenAI’s transformation to a for-profit model through its multibillion-dollar investments in the organization.
