DeepSeek launches its premier AI model, competing with OpenAI and Anthropic.
A year after shaking up Silicon Valley, DeepSeek revealed preview versions of its new flagship AI model, branding it the most powerful open-source platform and setting its sights on competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic PBC.

The Chinese startup launched the V4 Flash and V4 Pro preview series, asserting substantial advancements in reasoning and agentic functions, in addition to top-tier performance in coding benchmarks.

As noted by the startup on Hugging Face, these models can operate with a context length of one million tokens and incorporate numerous architectural modifications and optimization enhancements. DeepSeek introduced a concept it refers to as Hybrid Attention Architecture, claiming it boosts an AI platform’s ability to retain questions across extended dialogues.
More than a year has elapsed since the Hangzhou-based startup announced the R1, an open-source model designed to mimic human reasoning, which triggered a trillion-dollar market selloff. The R1 was reportedly developed for a fraction of the cost of cutting-edge AI systems from companies like OpenAI, yet it matched their performance.

Some IT firms and investors quickly began questioning the wisdom of investing billions in AI development. Since then, these investments have surged, with US tech companies projected to allocate nearly $650 billion towards data centers and AI infrastructure by 2026.

Rising Competition

As tech behemoths from Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. to Baidu Inc. flooded the market with affordable AI services, DeepSeek similarly ignited a frenzy in China. To outpace DeepSeek, competitors rushed to refresh their models in the weeks leading up to April, from ByteDance Ltd. to Zhipu and Minimax.

With newfound fame, however, came scrutiny. DeepSeek has faced accusations from American government officials and tech leaders of employing illicit technology and methods in developing its models. One point of contention is “distillation,” a technique where one AI model utilizes the output of another for training to acquire similar competencies.

OpenAI began expressing concerns privately shortly after the R1’s launch, with both OpenAI and Anthropic alleging they had detected such attacks from DeepSeek.

Additionally, there are fears that DeepSeek may have unauthorized access to Nvidia Corp., which is prohibited. Last year, US officials started examining the viability of AI chips.
