Why Cameron Green is Making Headlines Following KKR's Fourth Defeat in IPL 2026
Kolkata Knight Riders remain hopeful that their big signing Cameron Green will soon prove his substantial price tag worthwhile, but the Indian Premier League’s only winless team urgently needs the Australian all-rounder to step up.

The two-time champions are currently at the bottom of the 10-team standings with just one point from a washout against the Punjab Kings. Their latest setback was a 32-run loss to Chennai Super Kings on Tuesday, marking a fourth defeat that severely affects their playoff chances.

Green, who was signed for a franchise-record $2.77 million, was anticipated to lead Kolkata’s title campaign but has yet to make a significant impact. The 26-year-old participated solely as a batter in his first three matches due to a lower back injury, and his returns of only 56 runs from five innings have not met expectations.
In Chennai, he faced difficulties both with bat and ball, giving away 30 runs in two wicketless overs and departing for a first-ball duck. “He hasn’t had the start he would have hoped for, but he’s undeniably a quality player,” said bowling coach Tim Southee following the loss. “He hasn’t played much cricket leading up to the IPL. Of anyone, he’ll be the most disappointed in himself regarding his start. However, he’s a fantastic cricketer, and I’m confident he’ll rebound during this tournament.”

Kartik Tyagi took 2-35 in his four overs, but Chennai still surged to 192-5 against Kolkata’s weakened pace line-up. Kolkata has already lost Harshit Rana and Akash Deep to injuries and had to leave out overseas bowler Mustafizur Rahman due to diplomatic issues between India and Bangladesh.

They are also waiting for the arrival of Sri Lankan Matheesha Pathirana after the fast bowler’s recovery from a calf injury. “The results aren’t favoring us,” Southee acknowledged. “In recent games, we’ve witnessed glimpses of promise, just not enough to secure a win. The injuries haven’t helped, but we were pleased with Kartik Tyagi’s bowling performance.”
