Representatives from the United States and Iran engaged in a heated exchange regarding Iran’s nuclear aspirations at the commencement of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty review, a conflict likely to persist throughout the four-week session.
The focal point was Iran’s election as one of the 34 vice-presidents of the conference. Iran was nominated by the Nonaligned Movement, which consists of 121 predominantly developing nations.
The US received support from Australia and the United Arab Emirates, while the UK, France, and Germany also raised their “concerns.” Russia opposed the targeting of Iran.
The US envoy, whose identity was not disclosed, expressed that the Trump administration was “deeply shocked” that a nation which has shown “disdain” for the treaty is now holding a vice-president position.
Iran’s Ambassador to the UN in Vienna, Reza Najafi, firmly dismissed the US remarks, labeling the claims as “unfounded and politically charged.”
