These new avenues will enable community organizations, educational institutions, and employers to sponsor refugees to enter the UK. Officials noted that this initiative drew inspiration from Canada’s “community sponsorship” model, which has successfully resettled approximately 400,000 individuals since 1979.
“I will create new legal avenues for authentic refugees while addressing loopholes that have been frequently exploited,” Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated on Friday, June 26.
Simultaneously, Mahmood indicated that upcoming immigration legislation will aim to prevent the “misuse” of human rights laws and target “frivolous claims.” The definition of family will be narrowed to include only immediate family members.
Critics argue that the European Convention on Human Rights is often referenced to block the deportation of individuals who lack the right to remain in the UK.
This announcement comes as Mahmood faces speculation regarding her future in the role following Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s impending resignation.
Starmer revealed his intent to step down on Monday, June 22, after two years in office marked by misjudgments that have diminished his reputation within the party and among the public. He is expected to vacate his position weeks after the Labour Party selects a new leader.
