Trump informs Axios that he no longer considers Anthropic a national security risk.

Anthropic's AI chatbot Claude experiences service disruption as user complaints surge on Downdetector.
US President Donald Trump indicated that he may have considered artificial intelligence company Anthropic a national security concern last week, but no longer holds that view, according to an interview with “The Axios Show” published on Friday.

Senior technical personnel from Anthropic were set to meet with Trump administration officials earlier this week to address a disagreement over foreign access to its most advanced AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5.

Last week, the company restricted access to these models for all users following Trump’s directive for Anthropic to prevent foreign nationals from accessing them.
Here are some highlights from the Axios interview:
• When asked if he regarded Anthropic or its CEO Dario Amodei as a threat to national security, Trump stated: “Well, not now, but a week ago, maybe.”

• Trump mentioned to Axios that Amodei reacted to the administration’s export control directive “very quickly” and “responsibly.”

• Trump and other G7 leaders had a meeting with tech executives, including Amodei, at a summit in France this week.

• Trump did not dismiss the possibility of invoking emergency powers under the Defense Production Act concerning Anthropic, as reported by Axios.

• “I have the power to use a lot of things,” Trump remarked regarding the DPA. “But I’m not sure I have to do that.”

• In response to Trump’s interview, an Anthropic spokesperson stated: “We are grateful to the administration for their ongoing partnership in working to get this matter resolved as quickly as possible. We remain committed to working alongside them towards our shared goals of protecting critical infrastructure and ensuring the U.S. maintains its leadership in AI.”
