Tamil Nadu Government Formation: TVK Requests Meeting with Governor, Seeks Two Weeks to Demonstrate Majority

Tamil Nadu Elections: TVK Unveils Candidate Lineup; Leader Vijay to Run in Perambur and Trichy East Districts
Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party has reportedly reached out to Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar as discussions for forming a government gain momentum following a fractured mandate.

According to a report from NDTV, TVK is requesting a two-week period to demonstrate its majority for government formation.

The TVK emerged as the largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Election Results 2026 on May 4, securing 108 seats.

However, it did not achieve the 118-seat majority required to establish a government in the 234-member Assembly.

With TVK short by 10 seats — a gap that could extend to 11 if Vijay relinquishes one of the two constituencies he won, Tiruchirappalli East or Perambur — coalition discussions have intensified.

Tamil Nadu Assembly Election Results 2026

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) secured 59 seats, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK) obtained 47.

The Indian National Congress (INC) claimed five seats, whereas the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) took four.

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Communist Party of India (CPI), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) each won two seats.

How can TVK form the govt in Tamil Nadu?

According to India Today, both the Congress and the PMK are prepared to support the TVK in forming the government.

With this backing, the total would rise to 118.

Additionally, there is a chance that the IUML may also lend its support to TVK, as the party is already in coalition with the Congress in Kerala.

With that assistance, the count could potentially reach 120 (or 119 if Vijay has to vacate one seat) — making it feasible for the TVK to form the government in Tamil Nadu.

There is also a precedent for sub-majority governments making claims. In 2006, M. Karunanidhi formed the government with 96 seats, depending on external support.
