Stokes may step down after nightclub incident, according to reports.

Ben Stokes relishes the conclusion of England's long winless streak in Australia.
Ben Stokes, the England Test captain, may announce his retirement following an incident at a nightclub involving teammate Gus Atkinson.

The event took place on Sunday night after England secured a 115-run victory over New Zealand in the first Test of the summer at Lord’s.

According to TalkSport, Stokes is expected to step down from his position and might consider retirement.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has initiated an investigation into the incident, which also reportedly involves a rugby player.

The ECB is looking into a potential breach of team protocols that occurred after the conclusion of the first Test against New Zealand. Stokes and Atkinson were at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday when the incident unfolded.

“We are currently gathering more information, and a statement regarding the squad for the second Test will be issued in due time. The Cricket Regulator has been notified, and we will provide an update when we can,” the ECB stated.

Harry Brook, the team’s vice-captain, had previously apologized for an altercation with a bouncer in New Zealand last year.

Former England fast bowler Steve Harmison has defended Stokes.

“Once the complete facts are revealed, I believe we can pass judgment. Ben is a good kid. He’s an honest person, and he’ll know if he’s crossed any lines,” Harmison told TalkSport.

“I fully support him, and he’ll make the right decisions once all the information is available. I’ve known Ben since he was 15 years old.

“What I hope for now is to ensure that both Atkinson and Stokes receive the support they need, as there is a responsibility to care for their mental well-being.

“Given the uncertainty surrounding the facts and the various aspects involved, these two young men require protection from a team perspective.” The second Test against New Zealand is set to begin at The Oval on June 17.
