Stokes and Atkinson dropped by England for second Test, Root named interim captain
England’s captain, Ben Stokes, along with teammate Gus Atkinson, was excluded on Wednesday from the squad for the upcoming second Test against New Zealand while an investigation is underway regarding a nightclub incident.

In Stokes’ absence, Joe Root — a former captain of England — will take command at The Oval for the match commencing June 17.

The England & Wales Cricket Board stated that Stokes and Atkinson “are not available for selection.”
They violated team protocols during a celebratory night following their victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s on Sunday.

This event has intensified scrutiny on the professionalism and culture surrounding England’s test team after a dismal Ashes tour.
