Steps India Needs to Take to Reach Women’s T20 World Cup Semi-Finals Following Loss to South Africa
Last Sunday, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur marked her 200th T20 International match — a significant achievement that warranted celebration and a relatively relaxed atmosphere in the Indian dressing room. Unfortunately, the mood shifted to disappointment as India faced their first defeat in the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup.

India lost by six wickets to the Proteas Women. After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, India struggled to defend a meager total of 159. What lies ahead for Team India in this World Cup, and what does the journey to the semi-finals look like for the Women in Blue?

The route to the semi-finals has become challenging, yet it remains viable. However, it comes with stipulations. Here’s what Team India must do to ensure a top-two finish in the points table and qualify for the semi-finals.
Must-win matches

Team India approached the South Africa match with two victories under their belts. However, those wins came against Pakistan and the Netherlands — opponents considered less challenging. Taking on their rivals from the ODI World Cup final, South Africa, was always anticipated to be a tougher contest, and it proved to be just that. This single defeat has placed India’s semi-final aspirations in jeopardy.

Consequently, winning all remaining matches is now imperative. Harmanpreet Kaur and her squad will next face Bangladesh and Australia. While Bangladesh may seem like a more manageable task, Australia is consistently a formidable opponent.

Australia remains unbeaten in the tournament, sitting atop the points table with an impressive net run rate of 4.72. India will require a robust strategy, not only on paper but also in execution, as Australia will aim to continue their winning streak.

Openers shoulder the responsibility

The top order is both the greatest strength and the most significant vulnerability for India. A collapse can lead to struggle throughout the batting lineup. However, if the opening pair survives the powerplay and gets settled, they can become unstoppable.

Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma constitute one of the most dynamic opening pairs in women’s cricket. Since 2019, they have scored 3,549 runs as openers in T20Is for India, making them the country’s most successful opening duo.

In essence, Smriti and Shafali carry the crucial responsibility of providing strong starts and accumulating runs. Thus, it is vital for them to remain at the crease longer and contribute consistently.

Middle-order woes

It’s natural to feel pressure in high-stakes matches, but maintaining composure and managing nerves is equally vital. Players like Richa Ghosh, Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, and the captain herself have previously excelled in crucial situations.

The same level of composure will be essential in the upcoming matches if India aspires to claim its first ICC title.

Fielding concerns

Catches win matches, and India paid dearly for failing to capitalize on theirs.

While defending the target, India dropped three pivotal catches — two from Marizanne Kapp and one from Tazmin Brits. Kapp took full advantage, scoring 81 off 45 balls and assisting South Africa in achieving the third-highest run chase in Women’s T20 World Cup history.

Two of those dropped opportunities came from Radha Yadav, one of India’s most dependable fielders. Errors can happen, but at this juncture, such blunders can significantly impact the outcome of a match.

Bowling unit needs to step up

In this World Cup, India’s spinners were expected to carry a significant burden. Yet, Shree Charani has largely shouldered that responsibility alone. She has received assistance from Shafali Verma, who has contributed at least one wicket in every match.

However, the remainder of the bowling attack has been inconsistent. Deepti Sharma, who took five wickets against the Netherlands, conceded 44 runs in her four-over spell against South Africa and went wicketless.

Shree Charani’s performances have secured her the No. 1 position in the ICC Women’s T20I Bowling Rankings. Nevertheless, India will require collective efforts from the entire bowling unit moving forward.

India will compete against Bangladesh at 7 PM tonight, a pivotal chance not only to secure a win but also to enhance their net run rate. Even if India wins both remaining matches, net run rate could ultimately determine their semi-final qualification.
