According to county filings, the construction of the 13-kilometre (8-mile) pipeline is anticipated to commence next month, as reported by Reuters. The pipeline is slated to be operational by January of the following year, based on documentation submitted last month by SpaceX affiliate Lone Star Mineral Development.
What Is Starpipe?
Starpipe is a natural gas pipeline designed to deliver fuel directly to SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Texas. By utilizing this pipeline instead of relying on hundreds of tanker trucks for fuel delivery for each launch, SpaceX aims to transport natural gas to Starbase, where it plans to establish a liquefaction facility for converting it into liquid methane for Starship launches.
A port official noted that Starpipe will initiate from an 83-acre site at the Port of Brownsville, which SpaceX is currently negotiating to lease from the city for approximately fifty years, as reported by Reuters.
Why Is SpaceX Building It?
SpaceX is eager to expedite Starship launches. Currently, each launch necessitates around 630,000 gallons (2.4 million liters) of liquid methane, which is delivered to the launch site via tanker trucks. This process is time-consuming and incompatible with Musk’s growth strategies.
How Does It Fit Into SpaceX’s Future Plans?
Starship is central to SpaceX’s long-term vision. The 40-story Starship rocket is expected to play a pivotal role in expanding the Starlink satellite network, facilitating future space missions, and ultimately transporting astronauts to the Moon and Mars. The company has conducted 12 Starship test launches since 2023 and intends to increase the launch rate in the coming years.
Is SpaceX Planning More Than Just A Pipeline?
While it’s uncommon for a space company to construct its own natural gas pipeline, Starpipe may be an initial step in SpaceX’s broader strategy to develop its own fuel supply. According to Reuters, the company has been investigating natural gas drilling prospects near Starbase and throughout Texas for several years.
As per a review of Cameron County land records by Reuters, SpaceX has acquired over 100 oil and gas leases in Texas since 2023. Earlier, in a conversation with CNBC, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell mentioned that the company aims to build pipelines, produce its own rocket fuel, and is also looking into the feasibility of natural gas drilling. Additionally, it plans to construct a facility at Starbase to convert natural gas into liquid methane.
What Do Experts Say?
Stan Lindsey, an oil and gas consultant in Texas, believes that extracting natural gas could pose challenges for SpaceX, given the company’s lack of experience in the oil and gas industry. However, he acknowledged that the plan could still be viable. “I’m not saying it’s beyond the realm of possibility … it’s possible they got a really nice prospect,” Lindsey stated. He added that if SpaceX’s drilling endeavors do not yield results, “they’ve got a fallback position” with Starpipe.
