Rizwan is experiencing difficulties in the current Pakistan Super League and has led Rawalpindi to seven consecutive losses while grappling with his own performance issues.
“You consider retirement only when you realize you can’t compete effectively for a team spot,” he said during a media conference in Karachi.
When asked by a journalist if his recent performance warranted retirement to make room for younger players, Rizwan, 33, noted that he hasn’t been part of the Pakistan T20 squad since December 2024 but continues to participate in leagues abroad and at the domestic level. He acknowledged that his recent showings have not met expectations and admitted to telling teammates that such performance does not merit a place in the national team.
“Players are human and face tough times in their careers, and I am no exception. However, my love for the game across all formats remains strong, and I have no intention of quitting due to criticism,” he remarked.
This seasoned player expressed his commitment to putting in extra effort to regain his former excellence instead of contemplating retirement.
“A player should only consider retirement when they know they can no longer compete or have lost their passion for the game. I still believe I can compete,” Rizwan, who has represented Pakistan in 41 Tests, 103 ODIs, and 106 T20 internationals, concluded.
