Ajit Agarkar’s Contract as Chief Selector Extended Until Next Year

Ajit Agarkar's Contract as Chief Selector Extended Until Next Year
Ajit Agarkar will remain as the chairman of the senior selection committee after the BCCI opted to extend his contract for an additional year, with a focus on the 2027 ODI World Cup.

During Agarkar’s tenure, the Indian teams he selected from October 2023 to March 2026 reached four ICC tournament finals, emerging victorious in three of them: two T20 World Cups and one ICC Champions Trophy. It was widely expected that his contract would be renewed for a fourth year.

“Agarkar didn’t request an extension. A selector may serve up to four years on either the junior or senior selection committee and five years total across both committees. Therefore, Ajit’s contract is being renewed and not extended,” a senior BCCI source informed PTI.
Those close to Agarkar have consistently noted that he preferred to allow the decision-makers to evaluate his panel’s performance rather than actively seek renewal.

Continuity leading up to the 50-over World Cup is a significant reason behind the board’s decision. Throughout his tenure, the committee has made several difficult choices, including managing the Test retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, as well as gradually phasing out senior pacer Mohammed Shami from international cricket.

Additionally, it made a daring selection move by dropping Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill from the T20 World Cup squad, opting instead for in-form player Ishan Kishan.
