Rahul Gandhi was detained alongside Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other opposition leaders on Tuesday as they marched toward Prime Minister Modi’s official residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, in New Delhi, advocating for accountability concerning the examination controversy.
Delhi Police apprehended the two Congress leaders while leading the protest near the Prime Minister’s residence, where Congress members demanded accountability for the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak and sought the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Reports indicated that police attempted to forcibly remove Rahul Gandhi and were seen carrying him to a bus.

In his video statement, Gandhi presented five demands to the government:
- PM Modi should apologize to students for what Gandhi termed excessive police force against peaceful demonstrators.
- Dharmendra Pradhan and Amit Shah should resign, with Rahul Gandhi holding the Education Minister accountable for the examination issue and accusing the Home Minister of using police actions to suppress democratic protests.
- A thorough discussion in Parliament regarding student protests and the alleged examination irregularities.
- Justice for students, which includes actions against police officers who assaulted protesters and the withdrawal of cases filed against them.
- Prompt education and examination reforms to be implemented.
Following the detention, Gandhi, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, and several other opposition leaders were taken to Chhatrasal Stadium, while Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi arrived at Mandir Marg Police Station, where Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was held. Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, KC Venugopal, and Pawan Khera joined the protest at Lok Kalyan Marg, along with Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan and Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.
The demonstration followed a day of confrontations in Parliament, where the opposition demanded a discussion about the NEET-UG paper leak and the alleged police excesses against unarmed students.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party dismissed the Congress’s allegations, accusing the party of politicizing the student protests. In response, the Opposition maintained that the government was evading scrutiny over the controversy. In his statement, Gandhi questioned the collapsing state of India’s education system, the continual paper leaks, and why families faced financial burdens to educate their children, labeling these as legitimate queries deserving of answers.
