Chakraborty was defeated in the Barrackpore constituency by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Kaustav Bagchi, who won by a margin of 15,822 votes. Reflecting on his decision, Chakraborty remarked, “Politics is not for me,” and stated that he aims to return to filmmaking full-time.
He mentioned that he entered politics with a desire to serve people but ultimately realized that the political arena was not a suitable fit for him. The filmmaker-turned-politician expressed his wish to dedicate his efforts solely to cinema and cherish more moments with his family.
“Throughout my life, whenever I’ve taken on responsibilities, I have done so with sincerity and commitment. As a director, my goal has always been to entertain audiences through my films,” he shared.
Chakraborty, celebrated for his direction of various successful Bengali films, joined the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC in 2021 and won the Barrackpore seat during the West Bengal Assembly elections that same year. However, he lost his seat to the BJP in the recent election.
“In 2021, I ventured into politics and was honored to serve as an MLA. Over the last five years, I endeavored to fulfill my duties with the same enthusiasm. This chapter concludes in 2026, marking the end of my political journey,” Chakraborty elaborated.
The BJP made history by gaining power in West Bengal for the first time, putting an end to Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year administration in the state. The BJP won 208 seats in the 294-member Assembly, while the TMC secured 80 seats.
He also expressed optimism that the new BJP government would focus on the development of the state.
“The people of Bengal have spoken, and a new government will be sworn in on May 9. I hope the state progresses on the path of development,” he concluded.
