Major causes for delay and cancellations
Bad weather is a primary cause of delays, with earlier incidents this season resulting in over 12,000 delays and cancellations in one day. On April 19, unstable spring weather exacerbated the situation. Thunderstorms, low clouds, and shifting winds compelled air traffic controllers to reduce operations.
Additionally, heavy congestion at major hubs like O’Hare International Airport is stretching airport capacity. Concurrently, airlines are facing their own operational challenges, including tight aircraft rotations, crew availability issues, and overbooked schedules.
