Nitish Kumar Steps Down as Bihar Chief Minister; Samrat Choudhary Expected to Succeed Him
Nitish Kumar resigned as Bihar Chief Minister on Tuesday, April 14, announcing that he had submitted his resignation to Governor Syed Ata Hasnain.

The news followed a meeting he had with the governor at Lok Bhavan, which he later confirmed in a post on X.

“I have accomplished much for the people of Bihar. Recently, I decided to step down from my role as chief minister…and hence, after today’s cabinet meeting, I met the governor and handed over my resignation,” Kumar stated.

Longest-Serving CM Steps Down

The 75-year-old leader of Janata Dal (United) holds the record as the longest-serving chief minister of Bihar. His resignation follows closely after he assumed office as a Rajya Sabha MP.

Kumar was joined by Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, JD(U) national working president Sanjay Jha, and state minister Vijay Choudhary when he submitted his resignation.

He mentioned that the new government would be taking over soon and assured his continued support moving forward.

“The new government will have my complete cooperation and guidance,” he remarked.

Samrat Choudhary Likely Next CM

In the wake of Kumar’s resignation, BJP leader Samrat Choudhary is poised to become the next chief minister of Bihar.

Media reports indicate that Choudhary has been elected as the leader of the BJP legislature party and is anticipated to claim the opportunity to form the government at Lok Bhavan.

Sources suggest he may be sworn in as chief minister on Wednesday, April 15, at 11 am, marking him as the first BJP leader to hold the position in the state.

What Happens Next

With Kumar’s departure, Bihar is on the brink of a leadership transition. Attention now shifts to the establishment of the new government under BJP leadership.

Political activities are expected to accelerate, with the swearing-in ceremony likely occurring within a day.
