Pope found himself out of the team after six innings, accumulating 125 runs, as the Three Lions suffered a 4-1 series defeat.
“I guess I knew where I stood,” Pope reflected.
“Being dropped is challenging. I certainly didn’t want to be sidelined, but it was the correct choice at that moment.”
Pope, who has participated in 64 Tests since his debut in 2018, has had clear communication with the team management since his exclusion.
“For me, the discussions have been straightforward: ‘go back and score a lot of runs,'” he noted.
“If I’m not in that XI, how can I ensure I’m the best batter in the country? I aim to elevate my game and be prepared to step in whenever needed.”
Pope’s route back into the side is uncertain, especially with Bethell establishing himself across formats after his maiden first-class century in the fifth test in Sydney, followed by 105 runs in England’s T20 World Cup semi-final loss to India.
Additionally, Pope lost the vice-captaincy of the Test team to Harry Brook last year and will begin the County Championship season outside the Test squad for the first time since 2022.
“I still believe I can develop into a better player for the number three spot if the situation arises,” said Pope. “But we’ll see how the next few weeks unfold as the season approaches.”
“I’m not entirely sure what my summer looks like moving forward. Surrey has a block of seven games in the Championship, so I aim to continue improving my game for when the opportunity with England arises again.
“It’s a different experience not playing continuously in Test matches. Having this block allows me to return to what works well for me and ensure my game is in the best possible shape.”
