FSG characterized this decision as a “planned transition,” with Edwards resigning after playing a key role in a transformative period at Anfield since his return in March 2024.
“It has been an honor to come back to Fenway Sports Group and Liverpool Football Club at such a pivotal time,” Edwards expressed in a statement.
“I depart with the confidence that Liverpool is well-positioned, backed by exceptional individuals, a clear vision, and solid foundations primed for ongoing success.
Edwards initially joined the club in 2011 as performance director before advancing to sporting director in 2016. He gained recognition for his role in assembling the squad that clinched Liverpool’s first English league title in 30 years during the 2019-20 season.
After leaving the club in 2022, he returned as CEO of football in March 2024, overseeing football operations as Liverpool braced for the exit of former manager Juergen Klopp.
During Edwards’ tenure, Liverpool established a revamped football leadership structure and appointed a new head coach, with Arne Slot taking over from Klopp in June 2024.
Liverpool subsequently secured their 20th English league title in 2025 under Slot, although the Dutch coach was replaced by Andoni Iraola in June this year following a less successful second season.
No immediate announcement has been made by FSG regarding Edwards’ successor.
