West Bengal Phase 1, Tamil Nadu Assembly Election Voting Live Updates: Voting for the Assembly elections in 2026 for West Bengal and Tamil Nadu is scheduled to start on Thursday, April 23, with more than 12 crore voters anticipated to participate across 386 constituencies.

West Bengal will enter Phase 1 voting across 152 seats, while Tamil Nadu will conduct a single-phase election encompassing all 234 constituencies.

Approximately 6.82 crore voters in West Bengal and 5.73 crore in Tamil Nadu will influence the political landscape of these two significant states. The campaigning wrapped up on April 21, with the counting of votes set for May 4.
West Bengal Phase 1: Key battlegrounds

The Phase 1 elections in West Bengal cover vital districts such as Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, and parts of Jhargram and Paschim Bardhaman. Nandigram is a notable contest, where BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari is facing off against TMC’s Pabitra Kar among others in a multi-cornered battle.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) aims to reclaim its influence in North Bengal, while the BJP seeks to protect its strongholds established in the 2021 elections.

Tamil Nadu: Single-phase contest

In Tamil Nadu, around 4,023 candidates are competing. The DMK-led alliance under MK Stalin is up against the AIADMK-led block headed by Edappadi K Palaniswami, with actor Vijay’s TVK introducing a new element to the mix.
