Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu launched the service on Friday, June 25, as per an official statement.
With the Hub-and-Spoke model, international travelers can finalize check-in, immigration, and customs procedures at their departure airport before boarding a domestic flight to a designated hub, such as Delhi, from where they can continue their international travel.
The government indicated that this initiative aligns with its vision of making India the preferred aviation hub for Indian travelers by 2030, and a global aviation center by 2047.
During the launch, Naidu mentioned that this innovative model would enhance the accessibility of international travel and bolster India’s aviation framework. “Our newly developed hub-and-spoke model facilitates a significant change in travel for our citizens—no matter where they reside in India, they can start their international journey from their local city and travel worldwide seamlessly and confidently, on the wings of India,” he stated.
As per the PIB, better international connectivity through the Hub-and-Spoke strategy is anticipated to stimulate trade, tourism, investment, and regional economic growth.
Studies from the Ministry project that the initiative could create approximately 0.4 million direct and indirect employment opportunities and contribute an extra $30 billion to India’s GDP by 2030. By 2047, the cumulative economic effects could support nearly 16 million jobs and add around $1.4 trillion to the economy.
The government explained that both the domestic and international segments under this model will be classified as international operations to maintain security and operational effectiveness. Separate boarding passes will be provided for domestic and international travelers, while those using the facility will not have access to customs declaration services at the hub airport.
