Ecuador's President Announces Public Holiday Following Team's Advancement to World Cup Knockout Stage
Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa announced a national holiday on Friday after the national soccer team secured a surprising 2-1 victory over Germany, advancing to the knockout stage of the World Cup.

“I want to extend my gratitude to the players and the coach who, despite facing criticism, insults, and challenging moments, have managed to bounce back and bring such immense joy to the nation. Tomorrow is a holiday!” Noboa shared in a post on X.

The Ecuadorian team needed to win their final Group E match on Thursday after experiencing a loss to the Ivory Coast and settling for a draw with Curacao.
Despite conceding an early goal to Germany, the South American squad rallied to clinch the victory, igniting celebrations among supporters at a packed stadium in New York/New Jersey.

Germany had already secured their spot as group winners, while the Ivory Coast claimed second place with a 2-0 triumph over Curacao.

Ecuador qualified as one of the best eight third-placed teams, marking only their second advancement to the World Cup knockout rounds. They reached the round of 16 in the 2006 tournament held in Germany.
