India and Australia Launch Sports Partnership Plan for 2030 Commonwealth Games and Brisbane Olympics
On Friday, July 10, India and Australia announced a collaborative plan to enhance bilateral relations in sports, detailing initiatives that include high-performance training, sports science, significant sporting events, industry partnerships, and the involvement of women in sports.

This roadmap builds on the 2023 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding Cooperation in Sports and highlights specific areas for collaboration as both nations gear up for a decade filled with major international sporting events, such as the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad and the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games. It also aligns with India’s goal of hosting a future Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Emphasis on high-performance sports and coach development
India and Australia will collaborate to exchange best practices for the establishment and management of high-performance sports centers in India, focusing particularly on priority sports.

Both nations will promote two-way exchanges of coaches and educator trainers through a “Train the Trainer” model, and will look into implementing a physical education exchange program aimed at enhancing school sports, sports science, and community engagement.

Australia’s Sports Commission plans to enhance the skills of selected Indian coaches via the India-Australia High Performance Coach Development Programme. Furthermore, opportunities for promising young Indian athletes to engage in high-performance programs in Australia will be explored through scholarships supported by the Government of India.

The roadmap also suggests collaborating to promote yoga and yogasana in Australia by sharing knowledge and increasing participation.

Joint research in sports science and integrity

This roadmap encourages academic institutions in both countries to conduct joint research initiatives in areas such as athlete performance analysis, injury prevention, sports nutrition, wearable performance technology, recovery methods, and para sports.

With respect to sports integrity, Australia’s Sport Integrity agency and India’s National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) will continue to contribute to global anti-doping efforts through World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) capacity-building programs and cooperation under the UNESCO International Convention against Doping in Sport.

India and Australia are set to enhance collaboration in hosting significant sporting events by sharing best practices with Australian states, territories, and national sporting organizations.

The roadmap encourages exploring exhibition matches and youth events in sports of mutual interest, including kabaddi and kho kho in Australia, as well as Australian rules football and basketball in India.

Both countries intend to establish reciprocal arrangements among sporting bodies for sharing facilities, competitions, and support networks in the lead-up to major events like the Olympic, Paralympic, and Commonwealth Games.

Gearing up for the inaugural Big Bash League (BBL) match scheduled for Chennai in December 2026, the roadmap encourages Cricket Australia and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to strive towards hosting annual BBL matches in India.

Advancing sports business and investment

Building upon the Australia-funded Sports Industry Summit in Mumbai in December 2026, both nations will foster partnerships in sports equipment manufacturing, sports media and broadcasting, event management, and sports technology startups.

They will also facilitate market access for sports businesses, enhance India’s exports of sports goods to Australia, and promote Australia’s expertise in high-performance coaching, athlete wellbeing, nutrition, psychology, and strength conditioning.

Promoting women’s participation in sports

Both nations are set to initiate joint efforts aimed at advancing women’s leadership, health, participation, and high-performance sports, including bilateral tournaments for women athletes. This initiative draws upon the Australian Sports Commission’s flagship programs, recognizing sports as a vital avenue for women’s economic empowerment, leadership, health, and social inclusion.
