According to sources informing CNBC-TV18, Tata was slated to retire on July 31, 2026, unless the extension was granted. He is a seasoned professional at HDFC Bank, having begun his career with the institution in 1994.
Tata’s role is particularly significant as the bank’s CEO, Sashidhar Jagadhisan, noted in his guidance for FY27 that the bank is expected to achieve credit growth exceeding the industry average during this fiscal year. Tata’s continued presence as Chief Credit Officer is anticipated to be instrumental in this endeavor.
Tata’s extension arrives just before the board’s nomination and remuneration committee convenes to decide on the next CEO. Sashidhar Jagadhisan’s current term concludes on October 26, 2026, and the bank has already missed a deadline set by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regarding this matter.
Jimmy Tata’s Journey at HDFC Bank
Tata began his career as a Relationship Manager in the Corporate Banking Department and has since advanced to become the Head of that department. In June 2013, he was appointed Chief Risk Officer of HDFC Bank.
In 2020, Sanmoy Chakrabarti took over as Chief Risk Officer, leading to Tata’s transition to Chief Credit Officer of HDFC Bank. Additionally, Tata serves as a Director on the Board of the International Asset Reconstruction Co. Pvt. Ltd (IARC), HDB Financial Services, and as a Trustee of the HDB Employees Welfare Trust.
CNBC-TV18 has contacted HDFC Bank for comments regarding this situation, and a response is pending.
