Film icon Tom Cruise was present to honor Beckham, stating that Beckham has transformed the landscape of football in the United States.
The former Manchester United and England captain, now 51, shared with an enthusiastic crowd on the sunny boulevard that it was a “truly incredible moment.”
“I’ve always envisioned great things, but I never dreamed that an honor like this would come to a working-class English football player like myself,” he remarked.
“How appropriate it is that I am here today as we prepare to celebrate the kickoff of the 2026 World Cup here in the US.
“It’s a significant moment to acknowledge how the sport I cherish has evolved in this country over the last thirty years.”
Beckham, who played with LA Galaxy from 2007 for six seasons, expressed his gratitude for being celebrated alongside a Hollywood superstar.
“Standing here in front of my friend Tom Cruise, the greatest movie star of our era, is truly astonishing,” he said.
“You welcomed us to Los Angeles two decades ago, and your friendship and inspiration have meant the world to me,” he said to the actor.
The “Mission: Impossible” star noted that Beckham’s presence in Los Angeles was pivotal to the growth of football in America.
Beckham’s introduction “transformed this sport in this nation. Individuals who had never watched football or soccer suddenly found a reason to tune in.
“When David came, Major League Soccer boasted 13 teams. Now, it has 30. That’s the legacy we celebrate today: not just an outstanding career, but a legacy that altered the course of a sport.”
Victoria Beckham, his wife, a former Spice Girl turned fashion designer and entrepreneur, remarked on the surge of football in the United States.
“Soccer in America is embarking on one of the most thrilling chapters in its history, making this remarkable honor feel even more fitting,” she stated.
The United States, which first hosted the World Cup in 1994, is co-hosting this year’s tournament with Mexico and Canada.
The US national team will make its debut in Los Angeles later on Friday against Paraguay.
Beckham retired in 2013 after two decades with renowned football clubs, including Real Madrid, AC Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain.
Afterward, he invested in Inter Miami CF, which signed Argentine superstar Lionel Messi in 2023 and claimed the MLS title for the first time in its history last season.
Beckham also made strides in the entertainment industry, founding the content production company Studio 99 in 2019.
