Singh also set a new Commonwealth Games record in the snatch.
At 28 years old, he lifted a combined total of 264kg, trailing behind Malaysia’s Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq, who took home the gold with a total of 273kg. Kenya’s Joshua Amunga Mboya earned the bronze medal.
Rishikanta’s silver medal represents India’s second medal at the Games, following para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar’s bronze in the men’s heavyweight division.
The Indian weightlifter started strong in the snatch competition, successfully lifting 116kg, 119kg, and 121kg in his three attempts. His final lift of 121kg not only marked a new Commonwealth Games record but also set a personal best.
Malaysia’s Aniq also lifted 121kg in the snatch, making the clean and jerk the deciding event for the gold medal.
Rishikanta commenced the clean and jerk with a successful lift of 143kg but was unable to clear 148kg on his second attempt.
Aniq then successfully managed a lift of 149kg, positioning himself for the gold medal and leaving the Indian lifter in need of 151kg on his final attempt to claim victory.
Rishikanta could not complete the critical lift, concluding his efforts with a total of 264kg and settling for the silver medal, while Aniq secured the championship with 273kg.
Although he narrowly missed out on gold, Rishikanta’s Commonwealth Games record in the snatch and silver-medal achievement provided a noteworthy addition to India’s medal tally in Glasgow.
