England ODIs a Perfect Opportunity for Rohit Sharma to Secure World Cup Place: Sunil Gavaskar
Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar asserts that the upcoming ODI series against England is the perfect chance for Rohit Sharma to solidify his position as India’s opener for the ODI World Cup in 2027.

Rohit, along with Virat Kohli, is anticipated to return to international competition in the three-match series scheduled from July 14 to 19 after both veterans have focused solely on the 50-over format.

Gavaskar emphasized that Rohit understands his role in India’s World Cup strategy and expressed confidence in the captain’s ability to maintain consistent performance.
“Rohit Sharma has often been the topic of considerable discussion. He knows his position well. A clear line of communication has been established between him and the key decision-makers. He is completely aware of his standing, and his goal over the next year-and-a-half leading up to the World Cup should be to keep delivering consistently,” Gavaskar mentioned during an event hosted by Sony Sports.

The former captain is of the opinion that the England series is an excellent opportunity for Rohit to reaffirm his credentials ahead of the global tournament.

“England presents a great platform for him to demonstrate that even a year-and-a-half from now, he will be there at the top of the order for India,” Gavaskar added.

He also noted that scrutiny has been a constant factor throughout both Rohit and Kohli’s careers, highlighting that this experienced duo knows how to manage the pressures of representing India.

“The scrutiny begins the moment you debut and seldom ends in Indian cricket. They understand that the best way to cope with it is to keep scoring runs, taking catches, and contributing with their vast experience,” he stated.

The batting legend pointed out that, at this stage in their careers, the focus is more likely to be on their physical fitness rather than on their temperament.

“As one ages and crosses 35, the emphasis shifts more towards physical conditioning and fitness rather than temperament. With their experience, they will be able to manage that quite effectively,” Gavaskar expressed.

Before the ODIs, India will engage in a five-match T20I series starting July 1, aiming to bounce back from a recent series whitewash against Ireland.
