Musk reacted to an X post asserting that SpaceX AI now possesses a frontier model competitive with OpenAI’s GPT-4.8, and that Anthropic is significantly dependent on computing resources rented from SpaceX AI.
The post also brought back a comment from Musk made in September 2025, where he indicated, “Winning was never among the possible outcomes for Anthropic.”
I was clearly wrong about Anthropic. They are obviously currently the leader in AI. No company has released a model as good as Mythos/Fable and they will undoubtedly have Mythos 2 ready soon.
And I would never cut them off in a way that hurt them badly, even as a competitor.…— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 9, 2026
“I was clearly wrong about Anthropic. They are obviously currently the leader in AI. No company has released a model as good as Mythos/Fable, and they will undoubtedly have Mythos 2 ready soon,” Musk stated.
These remarks followed the US Department of Commerce’s recent lift of export restrictions on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 earlier this month. These limitations had been implemented on June 12 due to alleged national security concerns, resulting in the AI firm’s temporary suspension of their availability.
Last month, the US had partially relaxed the restrictions by permitting Anthropic to provide Mythos 5 to over 100 “trusted” US organizations, including those involved in critical infrastructure. However, broader access remained limited until the controls were fully lifted.
Musk also dismissed the notion that he might restrict Anthropic’s access to computing resources to damage the rival firm.
“I would never cut them off in a way that hurt them badly, even as a competitor. That’s not my style,” he remarked. The billionaire pointed to Tesla’s open-source patents and its decision to make the Supercharger network available to rival companies, as well as SpaceX’s strategy regarding competing satellite systems, as examples of fostering competition.
