India makes a promising start on Day 1
India had a remarkable opening day in lawn bowls, highlighted by Putul Sonowal’s stunning upset over reigning world champion Ryan Bester of Canada in the men’s singles.
In his Commonwealth Games debut, Sonowal secured the first set 5-4 before Bester leveled by winning the second set 7-3. The Indian maintained his composure during the tie-break to clinch a memorable victory and kick off his campaign successfully. He will face Cecil Alexander of the Falkland Islands on Friday.
Moreover, India celebrated a win in the women’s pairs event, where Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh narrowly edged past Malta in another tie-break.
The duo triumphed in the opening set 7-1, overcoming a determined comeback to secure the victory and give India a strong start in the competition.
With several medal events on the agenda and many of the nation’s top athletes ready to compete, India looks to transform its encouraging start into podium finishes on Day 2 of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
