“Coaching the Test side has been an incredible experience, and I take great pride in what we have accomplished together,” McCullum stated.
“I’m genuinely disappointed not to continue, but I fully respect the decision. My priority now is to dedicate my efforts to the white-ball teams and assist England in progressing further.”
This decision comes on the heels of England’s 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia earlier this year and follows Stokes’ retirement from international cricket during the home Test series against New Zealand.
Despite the ECB’s support for both McCullum and Stokes after the Ashes review, England’s performance in Australia revealed vulnerabilities in the highly successful partnership that had transformed the team’s style since 2022.
The partnership faced additional scrutiny during the New Zealand series when Stokes was investigated for violating the team’s midnight curfew following a nightclub incident, leading to his omission from the second Test before returning for the series finale, where he announced his retirement.
ECB chief executive Richard Gould expressed gratitude to McCullum for rejuvenating England’s Test side but indicated that the board felt it was time for a new direction.
“Brendon infused new energy into the England Men’s Test team during an exhilarating period that yielded remarkable victories, and we are thankful for all he has contributed to the role. We now perceive that a change is necessary for the Test team as we aim for victory in The Ashes next summer,” Gould remarked.
Appointed Test coach in 2022, McCullum collaborated with Stokes to implement the ultra-aggressive style of cricket known worldwide as “Bazball.”
His responsibilities expanded in September 2024 when he took on the leadership of England’s white-ball teams, succeeding Matthew Mott as part of the ECB’s initiative toward a unified coaching framework.
Under McCullum and captain Harry Brook, England reached the semi-finals of this year’s T20 World Cup and recently ascended to the top of the ICC men’s T20I rankings after a 4-0 series victory over India.
Managing director Rob Key acknowledged McCullum for transforming the culture of England’s Test side.
“Some of the most unforgettable moments in recent English cricket history occurred under Brendon’s tenure as Test team leader. It has been an absolute privilege to witness him mold the team’s mentality. He leaves the Test side well-positioned for future success,” Key stated.
The ECB has confirmed that the process to select England’s next Test head coach is already in motion.
