AMD plans to invest as much as $5 billion in Anthropic, revealing a partnership for gigawatt-scale AI infrastructure.

Chipmaker AMD and AI startup Anthropic have revealed a significant strategic partnership. AMD will provide up to 2 gigawatts of AI infrastructure for Anthropic, alongside a commitment to invest up to $5 billion as they enhance their collaboration on next-generation AI technologies.

According to the agreement, Anthropic will implement up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Helios rack-scale solutions powered by AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs, with the initial gigawatt expected to go live in the first half of 2027.

The deployment will include AMD’s Instinct MI455X GPUs, EPYC ‘Venice’ processors, Pensando networking technology, and the ROCm software platform. Anthropic currently utilizes AMD’s Instinct MI355X GPUs, and this new agreement marks a significant expansion of their partnership.
In addition to hardware, the two companies have initiated a multi-year engineering collaboration to accelerate AMD’s software development using Anthropic’s Claude AI assistant.

This collaboration will concentrate on optimizing AI workloads for AMD Instinct GPUs and enhancing the development of AMD’s ROCm software ecosystem. AMD also plans to integrate Claude more extensively across its engineering and product development teams.

As part of this expanded collaboration, AMD announced its intention to make a strategic equity investment of up to $5 billion in Anthropic in the future.

Lisa Su, AMD’s Chair and Chief Executive Officer, stated that the partnership leverages the strengths of both companies to foster the next stage of AI growth.

“We are excited to strengthen our partnership with Anthropic and deploy AMD Helios at a gigawatt scale. This collaboration merges Anthropic’s innovation in frontier AI with AMD’s high-performance computing capabilities. Together, we can accelerate large-scale AI adoption and position Helios as a principal platform for the next generation of AI infrastructure,” Su remarked.

Tom Brown, Co-founder and Chief Compute Officer at Anthropic, emphasized that access to computing infrastructure is essential as demand for Claude expands.

“Access to compute is vital for keeping Claude at the forefront and addressing customer demand. Partnering with AMD across the stack ensures we secure the capacity required and optimize it for training and serving Claude. Utilizing a diverse range of hardware enables us to match workloads with appropriate hardware,” Brown explained.

Both companies stated that the combination of large-scale infrastructure deployment, a long-term engineering collaboration, and AMD’s planned investment provides a solid foundation for advancing the development and deployment of next-generation artificial intelligence infrastructure globally.
